In the summer of 2000, I attended the Green Party National Convention in
Denver, Colorado. One of the featured speakers was Jelo Biafra, the former
lead singer of the punk band The Dead Kennedys. During his speech,
when talking about his frustration with poor media coverage of progressive
events, he urged the audience:
"Don't hate the media, become the media".
Motivated by this call to action, after returning to Austin, Texas where
I was finishing my Ph.D. in astronomy, I became a contributing columnist for
the largest college newspaper in the country, The Daily Texan. While writing my dissertation,
I took a break once a month to research and write on selected topics in
progressive politics. This is my collection of published columns:
